Brantford Zellers is Now Closed. What Next?

Now that Brantford Zellers is gone, and the sign has already come down, what is going to happen to the building? Will it become Brantford’s next white elephant?

Thankfully, the West Street building that held the soon to be defunct retail chain is going to be converted into two retail stores, according to sources.

The building will become home to a Toys R Us and a Brick furniture store. Brick will likely get the larger share of the storefront when it is complete.

Breaking But Not News: Remaining Zellers Stores to Close

Zellers, Zellers Brantford, Zellers Simcoe, Zellers is dead

The 64 remaining stores that have not been sold to Target will be closing. In a gutless move by the American hedge fund owned Hudson’s Bay Company, all Zellers stores, including stores in Brantford and Simcoe, will be shuttered for good by the end of the year.

Zellers is officially dead. A once great company that encompassed stores from coast to coast, Zellers fell victim to stiff competition from Walmart, and an inability to execute on an organzational and management level.

The chairman of NRDC renamed Hudson’s Bay, Richard Baker ,knew all along these stores remaining had no future and yet dangled them along until today. Absolutely shameful.

Target Still Coming to Brantford?

Zellers Brantford, Brantford, Target, West, Fairview

Rumour across facebook is that Target will not be coming to Brantford after all –at least not in the location on West and Fairview. Employees were told that Target will be selling the lease back to the owners at a date to be determined later.

Which begs the question, are they coming? Will they build a new location? Brantford deserves more than just a crappy Walmart. Fact.

Brantford Walmart: Fumbling the Ball on Customer Service

I am absolutely livid at the crappy customer service I got today at the place ironically named “Customer Service” at Walmart in Brantford today.

Here’s the back story. My boss, who is a woman, asked me to exchange two pairs of pants for her, as they were not the right size. Simple enough, right? An exchange is easy enough, it doesn’t cost Walmart anything, and I won’t have to feel like I’m one of those creeps that routinely try to get refunds all the time on everything (Anyone who has worked in department store retail knows who I’m talking about there).

Brantford Walmart, sucking at Customer Service

So I come in and wait in line. Line isn’t long. Great! I should be in and out in no time. It gets to my turn. I come up, bag in hand, with receipt. I mention casually that these pants aren’t in the size she would like and that I’d like to exchange for a different size. The lady at customer service starts processing a refund.

I try to stop her. “No, I just want an exchange in a different size!” I said. “Well, you can go get them and they’ll ring you through.” She said. “But I don’t know what style they are or anything!” I tried to reason with her. “There’s a couple girls in fashion I think that might be able to help you.” No budging. She processes the refund. this woman had at least 10 years of service (I’m sure that’s what her badge said) and knew I wasn’t interested in looking for pants. Doesn’t matter.

Now this is where I’m livid. While I’m a dude that has no problem picking up stuff for women; I’m really irritated by this. This wasn’t some great thing I was asking of her. I wanted someone to get the correct size of pants! I don’t want to be looking around aimlessly in the women’s section of fashion looking for pants that I didn’t get more than a 10 second glimpse at in hopes of “finding some” in the right size. Not to mention, how the hell are these girls going to help me find “some black pants” in another size if I don’t know what they are? I’m not going to look like an idiot trying to find girl pants in the store.

Let’s add the fact that they are under construction, and nothing is in it’s correct place. So even if I knew what type of pants they were, how the hell am I going to logically go and look for them? The right answer is to say “I’ll have someone bring those up in the size you want. It’ll be two minutes.”

Now I have left absolutely raving mad (you can tell I’ve calmed down some now) and have lost what little respect I was gaining for Brantford Walmart. As it is – if I want something from a Walmart I go out of Brantford because the store is either out of stock or the service is poor. Now another reason why this Walmart blows.

Get your fucking act together Brantford Walmart, or your store isn’t going to do any better post-reno once Target comes in. Just saying. Feel free to add your Walmart Brantford hell stories in the comment section.

Galen Weston says Farmers will kill you.

Loblaws chief Galen Weston Jr, owner of Weston’s Bread, Loblaws Supermarkets, and Holt-Renfrew, thinks Farmers’ Markets will kill someone.

“Farmers’ markets are great. . . ,” Weston said Tuesday during a speech to about 600 people at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, but added: “One day they’re going to kill some people though.”

Farmers’ Markets Ontario works with Ontario’s 36 public health units, each of which has a “champion” responsible for markets. It has a food safety manual on its website. In Brantford, Brant County Health Unit inspects farmers’ markets.

The CFIA manages about 235 food recalls by manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers each year. When the product poses a serious health risk, it issues a public warning.

Spokesperson Guy Gravelle said the vast majority of recalls involve supermarkets and grocery stores, but the agency will investigate complaints linked to mom-and-pop shops and farmers’ markets. He didn’t have statistics available.

Sorry, Galen, Loblaws will kill someone before the Farmers’ Markets do. I’ll put money on it.

Remember, do NOT buy Chiquita Bananas..

Look what I found at the Metro on King George Road last night at 10pm. Apparently Metro is not interested in defending Canada or Canadian Oil. Edit/Update: More on Chiquita’s shameful slave, cocaine, weapons, and human rights record here.

Brantford Metro, King George Road, Chiquita Ban, Boycott Chquita, Ehtical Oil

Feel free to contact Metro here with your displeasure. I did this morning with the following letter:

I am disappointed to see you are still stocking Chiquita bananas, despite the fact that their parent company is not interested in supporting Canada or Canadian Oil. While they may have been in amongst Dole bananas, I will not buy bananas from a company that is not reciprocating support for our country, and our country’s export of ethical oil. Please assure Canadian consumers that Metro nor Food Basics will support companies that do not support us.

Thanking You in Advance,

Roby

As a reminder, Generation Zel! Radio will continue to air the advertisements supporting the Chiquita Banana Boycott for the month of January as a public service to Canadians.

5PM UPDATE: Metro has sent me an update in regards to the Chiquita Banana situation this afternoon, and I am glad they did.

Thank you for your e-mail.

As a food retailer, we offer our Customers many choices.

Upon further investigation with our Produce Procurement Team, we have been advised that our main supplier of bananas (represent 80% of the bananas sold in our Stores) are from Dole.

We appreciate your comments.

Regards,

Elsa, Metro Customer Care
